The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a professional body promoting and enforcing international standards in the valuation, management and development of land, real estate, construction and infrastructure.

In 2018, as part of their 150th anniversary, RICS launched the Pledge150 campaign with LandAid to deliver bed spaces for young homeless people across the UK. Their target is to raise £2.25 million for LandAid. The campaign aimed to unite the property industry into contributing and creating a collaborative response and approach to solving the problem of homelessness in the UK.

The Duke of Cambridge attended the Pledge150 fundraising launch event, saying in his speech that; “Homelessness affects every single community across the country - at least 1 in 200 people in this country sleep rough...yet the figures ignore those young people who are often called “sofa-surfers”.

The launch event raised £127,000 alone. Over the following year companies signed up to the Pledge150 and many raised funds through a wide variety of activities including marathons, sleep outs and cycling challenges, while other firms donated to the fund or supplied pro bono services and expertise.

By August 2019 Pledge 150 had delivered 76 bed spaces across the UK.

The CEO of RICS Sean Tomkins said: “We are delighted with the success of our Pledge150 campaign. Not only has it delivered a significant number of homes for young homeless people, it has also created a legacy of uniting all those who work in the land, property and construction sectors to help end homelessness and use their skills and expertise for the greater good”.

Examples of charities and projects funded by Pledge150 funds include:
Simon Community Northern Ireland
- The funds helped to deliver 6 bed spaces
St Basils in the West Midlands
- Their grant helped to renovate hostel accommodation in Birmingham, delivering 21 bed spaces
Manchester Settlement
- Two houses were renovated using the funds which helped to create four new bed spaces
YMCA East Surrey
- Their Pledge150 grant has helped to deliver 16 more bed spaces in Surrey.

In addition RICS produced a report entitled, Solutions to Youth Homelessness, which compiled essays and thought pieces by experts in the housing industry and those working within the charity sector who are focused on solving the issue of homelessness to offer solutions to ending homelessness. Future Work:

Over the next couple of months, we will be releasing further case studies and big ideas from both retail and other industries on how they are trying to address homelessness.

Read our other case studies on Social Bite, Pret Foundation, Change Please, Unhoused and Beyond Food Foundation.

We will also be releasing toolkits on recognising vulnerability to homelessness and the impact of in-work poverty, and encouraging compassionate ways to manage rough sleeping in your area.

Likewise, we will also be signposting to volunteering opportunities from now and over the Christmas period to help those without proper shelter as we work to eradicate rough sleeping once and for all.

Keep up-to-date with the latest work we are doing in this area on Twitter and LinkedIn.
