Festival of Place at Tobacco Dock04 July 2019
The Festival of Place is a one-day creative event that brings together developers, investors, designers, city officials, planners and consultants to rethink placemaking together in a challenging and creative environment.
The ambitious event was launched by The Developer in creative contrast to industry events by focussing on exemplary placemaking from the citizen’s point of view. The Festival of Place is set to tackle conversations other places avoid. It’s an unmissable event if you want to understand how to navigate the forces challenging good placemaking.
Christine Murray, Editor-in-Chief of The Developer says, “A lot of people have told me in this sector that they want us to tackle real issues and be a forum for the conversations other places avoid. It’s an unmissable event if you want to understand how to navigate the forces challenging good placemaking today.”
Alongside an impressive rota of speakers from development and academia, which includes Sir Stuart Lipton, of Lipton Rogers LLP, Dr Patrice Derrington of Columbia GSAPP and Tim Tompkins pf Times Square Alliance, the programme includes Placehack workshops – interactive sessions that encourage disruptive thinking about the way in which we make new places in cities.
Live judging will also take place throughout the day for The Pineapples awards for place. The Pineapples, sponsored by the Design Council, celebrate the urban life of developments and places where people want to live, work and play. The four categories include completed place, place in progress, contribution to place for individual buildings and meanwhiles, and future place, for masterplans.
The awards are unique because all shortlisted built projects are visited by the judges, as well as presented to a live audience of delegates at the Festival of Place. Golden pineapples will be presented to the winning entries at The Pineapples awards party.
